Activities in prisons

Prison Fellowship’s services  - through the Community Security Department – designed for persons convicted to imprisonment cover a wide range of activities forming an integrated model of social services, designed to respond to specific needs that can contribute to the social inclusion of prisoners and the prevention of relapse, in line with the personality characteristics of these people.

The activities that constitute these services offer the coordinates of influencing and modeling of beneficiaries personality in the context of networking with the community they belong to and in the context of social integration.
Counseling activities, individual psychotherapy and group psychotherapy are primarily addressing problems associated with the offending conduct, while assistance programs for completion of studies, professional qualifications, employment, job and leisure time are design to meet the needs of social inclusion beneficiaries.

Training for release Program
Preparing for release begins with at least three months before parole period and is conducted in facilities provided by Gherla Penitentiary.
This activity aims to establish the major coordinates of social, school, professional and  family reintegration strategy, individualized for each beneficiary. Starting from the initial assessment results, it will be developed a personalized plan of prevention of  relapse and social reintegration, divided into several areas of intervention (criminal behavior, education, training and employment, family, personal resources and social services Community).

The plan includes: criminogene needs and interventions that can meet these needs, difficulties may be encountered in the community and ways to counter their strategy to avoid offending risk situations. Prisoners are encouraged to be actively involved in the construction of the personal relapse prevention and social reintegration plan.

After leaving prison, psychosocial and material assistance to persons released continues primarily  by supporting them in completing of their studies - when needed – in getting proffesional qualifications and finding employment, in improving family relationships and in the involvement of these direct beneficiaries in activities designed to reduce the risk of committing new crimes.

The released people who don`t have housing and financial resources are provided with temporary shelter at the Christian Center for Homeless and are helped with money, food and clothing to ensure urgent needs.

Cognitive - behavioral Counseling Programs
This program is designed for all the direct beneficiaries for whom the initial assessment of psychosocial needs has revealed a high levels of recidivism. The program aims to change criminal behavior.
The starting premise is that individuals engage in the process of attitudes and behavior change if they are supported in realizing and understanding of the relationship between criminal thinking and behavior and are helped to acquire / develop skills and social competences.
In other words, they learn that criminal behavior is the result of their decisions and therefore can be controlled.

Vocational counseling Programs
Through vocational counseling beneficiaries are advised and supported in choosing forms of professional training conforming with each one`s skills, interests and values.

The overall objective of this type of conseling is to train and develop skills necessary in identifying, acquiring and appropriate use of information about itself and about the labor market skills that will facilitate a decision as realistic as possible about their social status and occupational future.
It aims to develop a positive attitude towards work and to develope skills required to find a job (using occupational data sources, preparing a resume, interview presentation and selection, etc.)

The program is based on psychological testing with the battery of cognitive tests - BTPAC –that allows the identificationof appropriate ocupations and professions for a person while also suggesting future directions and aims for intervention.

Moral Development Programme
The Development of Moral Attitude Program has two major goals: (1). higher levels of moral attitude in participants (2) develop and exercise of moral reasoning skills.

Social skills development and problem solving program
Social skills development and problem solving program facilitate learning and practicing of social and resolution skills, but also of techniques of cognitive restructure, resulting in increased selfcontrol at a cognitive, behavioral and emotional level and in finding solution to problems in a prosocial manner.

Assistance and individual counseling for families of prisoners
The main goal of the program is to enhance a positive family support and / or maintaining the relationship between families and inmates.
The work involves assessing the family in terms of material wellbeing, social relations between family members and maintenance of conection with the family member in custody and attitude toward his criminal behavior. The assesement`s outcome determines the type, frequency and intensity of intervention to be given to the families of direct beneficiaries.
Intervention focuses on developing social skills and networking necessary for proper functioning of the family but also provide material and financial support of the family needs (pay at the prison transport, food packages, etc.).

With the financial support provided by Prison Fellowship Foundation and through a funding program of the European Union and other donors, a total of 62 customers attended vocational qualification courses.
Other clients have been financially supported by families, the department is only involved in mediating between them and the organizations / institutions engaged in vocational training courses, being monitored and advised till the completion of these courses.

Approximately 120 customers were able to find a job. They are also given profesional counseling for maintain their job and monitored by professionals within the department.

The success of our work is due to the very good cooperation with the Training and Employment Agency Cluj who helped us both in the inclusion of former inmates in the vocational training programs as well as in the employing of our customers through mediating contracts with various employers .
